There are few things more enticing than a day spent doing as little as possible, with a good friend and no demands on your time from children, partners or family pets. Add the luxury of a pampering treatment and afternoon tea and it’s heaven on earth.

The Spa at The Midland offers the choice of peace and quiet and the chance to chatter the hours away, an array of dreamy treatments and a delicious Afternoon Tea, all in utterly luxurious surroundings…heaven on earth indeed.

My friend Eileen and I toddled along on a cold Sunday in November, feeling positively gleeful about our escape from household duties. This sense of glee increased dramatically upon arrival at The Spa, as we were ushered into a world of luxury. Throwing on our dressing gowns and slippers, we agreed on a quick cup of tea in the relaxation room before heading to the pool area, for sauna, steam, spa and swim.

Hmmm…not so quick. The relaxation room is a joy. Choose from individual hanging pods for a snoozefest, pairs of retro chairs for a quiet chat or, like us, grab a separate room, close the doors and set the world to rights. It took several cups of delicious fruit tea and a couple of hours to catch up on the months that separated us, and then we headed for the pool area.

The Spa offers both a Himalayan salt block sauna and a salt infused steam room, which are designed to soothe both body and mind. Between rooms, you can enjoy a ‘lifestyle shower’. In short, a shower that offers three options – Caribbean storm (a satisfying drenching of warm water), Arctic rain (just as you imagine but I can’t tell you how it feels as I wasn’t brave enough to risk it!) and a soft cool mist that I did risk, but at a distance! The pool is positively balmy and drifting around (chatting some more) is a lovely way to while away even more lazy time.

It is the treatments however that really make the day. This is an ESPA Spa, a fact immediately apparent as you enter, as the unmistakeable fragrance of ESPA fills the air. I chose a Lifestage Facial, being of a lifestage when facials are always a good idea, which promised to tackle the most visible signs of aging along eyes, lips, neck and jawline. Having selected my preferred aromatherapy oil, I settled down to be spoiled. Oh the bliss of it! Talented hands skilfully massage face, décolleté, shoulders and scalp lifting you to a state of floating relaxation. My skin was left plumped and smoothed, with soft, hydrated skin that kept its glow for days. I want another one, please…

And next, Afternoon Tea. I personally can’t think of a more lovely way to spend a day than being thoroughly well looked after, and to cap it off with a delicious Afternoon Tea is the cherry on the opera cake. Oh, and the opera cake is seriously, wonderfully good! Delicious sandwiches, dreamy cakes, warm scones with jam and clotted cream…bliss.
