Ah yes! It is that time of year again, when millions of us decide we're going to get fit and lean. So we take to pounding the streets and lifting weights and what happens - nothing.

Well, unless youre like Leisl here who joined Re-Create Boot Camp in Lymm and who is now nearly two stones lighter.

Boot Camp is the fitness phenomenon that has really taken off. Its not for the faint-hearted however as Joan Fonda used to say in the 1980s, no pain-no gain and look at her. Now nearly 80, she can still yoga pose like a teenager.

Boot Camps are outdoors and are about challenging you and your fitness and stamina through a series of gruelling exercises preceded by a warm-up. Theyre great bonding experiences too.

Boot Camp

Hi Liesl, How are you finding RC Boot Camp?
Im loving Boot Camp. Quite a few of my friends now come along, and Ive also become friends with people that Ive met there. If I cant make a session I really miss it and feel really envious when those that went.

Why did you join RC Boot Camp?
I joined Boot Camp to lose weight and to get fit. Ive lost weight many times in the past but Ive never kept it off. Ill keep the weight off this time because Im going to continue coming to Boot Camp and keep on exercising.

What have you achieved since starting RC Boot Camp?

I started Boot Camp at the end of August and in that time Ive gone from 11 stone 12lbs to my target weight of 10 stone. But even more importantly Ive significantly improved my fitness. When I started I could barely run 100m, this morning I ran more than four miles with some friends from bootcamp, and Ive just signed up to run the Manchester 10k next May!

Has it changed your life and if so, in what ways?

Its changed my life in so many ways. Ive regained a lot of the confidence Id lost because I wasnt happy with the way I looked, I fit into all my favourite clothes again, I have loads of energy now and I feel great about being fitter and healthier.

What has been your most memorable moment at Re-Create Boot Camp?
Every Boot Camp session is so different and each is memorable in its own way. I suppose it probably has to be the time we ran round a pole with our forehead on it. I got so dizzy that I started running sideways before finally falling over into a huge puddle of mud! Of course Chris faux pas feature quite high as well.

Would you recommend Re-Create Boot Camp?

I would definitely recommend Re-Create to anyone. If you had asked me four months ago if I would be doing Boot Camp, I would have laughed. I was overweight and had never enjoyed exercise. But here I am, three months on, having a great time with great people and its really worked for me too.

What would you tell someone who has never been before?
I would say that you should give it a try and not to worry if you think that you are too unfit. All different fitness levels attend and we all support and encourage one another. If you are anything like me it will completely change you approach to diet and to exercise. Its really worked for me and others in the group and theres no reason why it wouldnt work
for you.

Fitness isnt just about getting the right amount of exercise it is also about nutrition and treating our bodies with the respect they deserve.
Which is why I followed in the footsteps of our regions celebs and paid a visit to Complemed in Altrincham where Abbas Mhar and his team has been practising complimentary medicine for years.

Hes an expert in remedial massage and manipulative therapy and is very hands-on in the nicest possible way.

My problem had been what I had been told by my GP was probably tendonitis but which Abbas told me was actually a build up of toxins in my soldus muscle, which leads into the tendon. So I lay on his couch and was given one of the most thorough massages Ive ever had. Id like to say this was relaxing and enjoyable but it wasnt. It hurt like anything! Abbas was using his expert manipulative techniques to smooth out the membrane over the musculature, which he tells me, as we get older becomes woody and less flexible.

The truth is that as we age, our bodies can become less flexible and therefore our bodies become much more vulnerable. Nice to know that complementary remedies are often more effective than the more orthodox of rest and painkillers offered at the doctors.

Complemed also gives information about preventative medicine and well-being and Abas recently helped Coronation street star Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster in the soap, overcome the ravages of chemotherapy with a revitalising nutrition programme.

I went for two treatments with Abas and it definitely relieved the pain I had been experiencing.

If necessary, therapists liaise with patients GPs and specialists to make sure that people get the right treatments. JR
