The North West is blessed with great galleries offering spectacular artworks from both recognised and new artists.

Whether you’re an experienced art collector or planning to make your first major purchase, there’s probably a gallery to suit your needs. Gone are the days when galleries were intimidating places, now the staff are there to help and guide you through the process and often their websites are a source of fascinating information too.

Many galleries also hold exhibitions so that’s a great chance to pop in and see the pieces on offer. Whether you want to buy a painting you love or for an investment, there’s something to suit and gallery owners will be happy to talk through your requirements. Many in this area also specialise in Northern art and Northern artists and with so much talent on our doorstep it’s a great place to start.

CAPES DUNN

It is said a ‘room without pictures is like a house without windows.’ However, in my experience paintings are something that people are least confident investing in, writes Michael Perry, of Capes Dunn Auctioneers. As fashion has such a dramatic effect on the value of art, this resistance is perhaps justified. At Capes Dunn Auctioneers, and other auction houses across the country, the value of iconic and 19th century watercolours has plummeted as people favour 20th and 21st century art. Apart from general trends, other events can have a dramatic and unforeseen influence. For example, the recent major exhibition of L.S. Lowry’s work at the Tate has caused the value of his signed limited edition colour prints to double and treble overnight at the Capes Dunn specialist Northern Art sales. An edition entitled “Our Town”, No 661/850, valued in 2012 at £600-800, reached £2,400 at auction in October 2013. However my general advice would always be to buy what you like. If the value subsequently goes up, good luck, but the pleasure a picture can give can last a life time.
