ounded by Howard Ashwood and his wife Janet in 1994, Branches of Warrington is celebrating 23 years in business this year; and their success is, Howard believes, down to a clear company ethos: choice, quality and service.

Branches offers, they say, an unbeatable choice of beautiful oak, ash, pine and painted wood furniture for the home, all carefully selected from UK and international manufacturers. They have also brought together an extensive home accessories and giftware range, offering an inspiring choice of pictures, lamps, mirrors and ornaments as well as some smaller more unusual furniture items too.

Howard and his wife Janet started their furniture retail business in April 1994 trading as part of the “Durham Pine” franchise, with their first premises in Warrington town centre. Their son Simon joined the team in 1999 before they moved to their current two storey showroom in Stockton Heath, two years later.

Now employing eight people, the store rebranded to its current name ‘Branches’ 13 years ago, extending the product offering to include oak, ash and other hardwoods, as well as pine.

When asked what has made Branches so successful, Simon told us that sourcing and stocking an extensive range of products that provide excellent value for money has been critical to their success: ‘Our business ethos is focused on providing high quality, affordable furniture products with the emphasis on offering a unique range of products that are not available in the large chain retailers,’ he says. ‘This, supported by exceptional levels of customer care and service, has been the bedrock of our business.

‘Wherever possible, furniture is sourced from UK suppliers and/or manufacturers and we respond quickly to changing trends or customer demand too, as is demonstrated by our response to the increase in demand for painted furniture, reflected in the choice of colours, finishes, and the extended number of ranges we offer.’

As a local independent retailer, the Branches team understand the importance of providing a very personal service to customers and Howard believes that this is key to the loyalty they have, with people returning to the store when seeking to refresh additional rooms in their home. All furniture deliveries are made by the Branches team and, where required, furniture is assembled on site as part of the delivery service.

‘We have built a team here who know the business, know and understand our customers and are committed to everything Branches stands for,’ Howard says. ‘The basics of Customer service can be taught, but when people have a sincere desire to look after customers and deliver the very best in support and service, then this really shines through and this is what our customers recognise we have here.’

Branches’ large, airy showroom is 8,000 square feet, spread over two floors and includes over 25 contemporary and modern room-set displays of bedroom, dining, living, occasional and home office furniture; inspiration is not hard to find here, as the extensive choice of displays allows customers to really appreciate how the furniture can look when they get it home.

‘Room sets, with accessories from our own collections, really help people envisage how things will look in their own homes,’ says Howard. ‘Our team works hard to present the furniture in a way that inspires our customers and helps them make the right choice, after all, they are going to be living with it for a long time! We are delighted with the loyalty and support we have received from our customers over the years and we would like to thank them all for their custom. We will continue to develop our ranges and product offerings further, along with delivering excellent service to clients old and new, for many years to come.’
