Five star treatment in the city

Shopping, chilling, chatting, pampering…these are a few of my favourite things… Manchester offers pretty much everything a girl needs in terms of retail therapy, but after a hard morning’s work choosing your summer wardrobe, the thought of some serious girly pampering is irresistible…but just where in the big city does one go for the perfect way to wrap up the day. Step up and take a bow The Spa at The Lowry Hotel.

Set on the top floor of this luxury hotel, the service is five star from the moment you arrive and as for the treatments… well, with Elemis and a talented therapist, what’s not to love?

As the elegantly dressed doorman ushered me into the hotel’s foyer, then guided me to the lift and even pressed the button for me, I knew my afternoon of ‘me time’ was going to be rather special.

I booked in for two fabulous treatments and Afternoon Tea. My first treatment was a quite wonderful Intensely Cleansing Salt Scrub with a neck and shoulder massage. I chose the sweet and creamy, very feminine, Frangipani oil – soothing and relaxing, just what I needed. My therapist, Sandra, was delightful. I have an ongoing issue with horribly tight shoulder muscles and she very skilfully managed to massage them into a very relaxed state and no pain! (I have had occasion to whimper ‘please stop’ in the past!). The salt scrub, applied in long, smooth strokes, is showered off, leaving skin soft and supple – perfectly ready for me to start with the summer fake-tan routine, indeed!

Feeling very chilled, I headed out for a delicious Afternoon Tea. It is really quite hedonistic, I think, being utterly pampered in this way, but there’s nothing wrong with an occasional splurge of hedonism. Actually, to be fair, I could totally live with an ongoing state of hedonism. I can just see me and my friends, all wrapped up in cosy robes, delicately nibbling on raspberry macarons and smoked salmon sandwiches on a weekly basis. Oh, and the hazelnut profiteroles. And the Bakewell tarts. And the ginger cake was rather moreish too.

After my mini gastronomic splurge it was back to the treatment room for a fabulous facial – the brand new Elemis Superfood Facial. In my opinion, a facial needs to make me feel gloriously relaxed and happy. Anything else and it’s a clinical treatment, not a pamper. Okay, so there’s a fine line, but for me if it doesn’t include a trance-inducing massage, then it lands firmly on clinical. This one – well, it includes quite the most fabulous facial massage I have had for a long time. My ‘area of concern’, I told Sandra, is my eyes. She took me very seriously and spent a long time gently massaging the whole eye area, with great success. Afterwards my skin glowed, it felt deeply moisturised and all plumped up. Oh the joy!

I asked if I could take Sandra home with me, but no deal. When I win the lottery I am going all Dynasty (the new Netflix version) and having my very own Sandra on call. Until then, the Spa at The Lowry it is.
