The verdant and geologically fascinating Azores are only three-and-a-half-hours flying time from Manchester. Yet, in many ways they are a world away from familiar holiday destinations with a similar flight time.
Because mass tourism has not scarred their amazing landscape. The islands were formed several millennia ago by the forces of nature. Volcanic eruptions created a fertile earth now rich with unusual flowers and plants. The ocean has shaped their dramatic coasts and there are scores of volcanic features and mystic lakes to fill visitors with awe. The most popular island is Sao Miguel, but there are no gaudy resorts here. Locals go about their business along the quaint streets filled with pavement cafes and smart shops. There are art galleries housed in historic buildings, and the dramatic port on a sunny day is a sight to behold.

Dont miss
