Rachel Bishop on 25 years at Moorcroft

Rachel Bishop is heritage pottery Moorcroft’s senior designer and has held this position for 25 years. This year marks her Silver Anniversary with Moorcroft and she has created a special collection, A Silver Salute, to mark the occasion. Here she tells us how she feels about being in her dream job…
Where did it all start for you?
I have always wanted to be a designer, from a small child. I was determined to follow my dreams and continued my education through to a design degree.
What’s the best thing about your job?
It’s about creating: turning a white piece of clay into something beautiful, but also about continuing the heritage of our pottery industry which has had a hard time. Being proud to be working with such amazingly skilled people and producing the best pottery in the world!
What keeps you motivated?
I’m quite a self- motivated person by nature, I have ideas that need to release themselves, but we all have our artistic ‘ block’ days ! The collectors motivate me so much, they are the people who keep me going!
Who has inspired you?
My inspiration comes from, in essence, two places: my late mother was a very creative woman, but her creative side came out in gardening, hence my love of floral designs; also William Morris, his design work was pure heaven!
What was the best piece of advice you ever received?
When there’s a crossroads, the easy path is not necessary the best.
What would you advise people just starting out in your industry?
I’d advise people starting out in ceramics to always stay true to yourself. If someone doesn’t like what you’re doing, don’t get disheartened, because someone else will!
If not Moorcroft, where?
I think my 25 years here answers that!
