WHATS THE SCOOP?

Research from Gaggia, the premium ice cream machine maker reveals that chocolate is the nations favourite ice cream flavour

With the country enduring a sombre summer of rain, basking in warm summer sunshine seems like a distance memory, however a survey out today has revealed our love of ice cream is still as strong as ever, with 82 per cent of Brits loving the dessert. The survey commissioned by Gaggia, which is launching its premium ice cream machine the Gelatiera, also reveals that chocolate is the nations best-loved ice cream flavour.

While traditional ice cream flavours are still in vogue with chocolate (22 per cent), rum & raisin (5 per cent), and classic vanilla (6 per cent) making it into the top flavours list, the survey shows that new flavours are gradually becoming family favourites. Caramel (16 per cent), strawberry cheesecake (9 per cent), hazelnut (4 per cent) and pistachio (4 per cent) are also scoring highly amongst Brits.

Vivienne Palmer from Gaggia, said: Even with the introduction of new desserts, we still love this wonderful, creamy dessert. It is part of our great British summer heritage of seaside holidays that come rain or shine, we Brits love nothing more than tucking into a delicious ice cream. Theres a trend of people moving away from safe vanilla and giving into the temptation of more indulgent flavours, with the high number chocolate variations that are available on the market its no surprise that its the nations number one.

Despite this love of ice cream amongst Brits, the survey also found that Britain isnt known for producing the most delicious ice cream. Italy was overwhelmingly voted the best makers of ice cream (45 per cent of respondents), with the United States (23 per cent) and Britain (22 per cent), trailing behind.

However, inspired by the success of TV shows like Come Dine With Me, Brits are trying to outdo the Italians by producing delicious ice cream themselves. The study found one in five has attempted to make their own ice cream showing an emerging culinary trend. Although many Brits (42 per cent) think it is too difficult to make ice cream at home or would take too long (46 per cent).

Vivienne Palmer continued, The sound of the ice cream vans captivating music appeals to young and old, but its now much easier for people to experiment and recreate the magic of the ice cream van by making ice cream at home, as and when they want it.
